I expect this is is due to an unsupported extension on the OpenGL
implementation for the GeForce.

Performer detail texture relies on the extension SGIS_detail_texture,
the string test used is "detail_texture". Unless you get a match on this
extension string it's not going to attempt to implement the feature, and
worse, if it DOES match the string it would use the texture target
GL_DETAIL_TEXTURE_2D_SGIS along with a few other choice SGIS filter
tokens. Maybe any other EXT or 3rd party enumerants would match the SGIS
version of the extension and it would work, that would be the right
implementation policy but the extension probably just isn't there.

Use glxinfo to get a list of supported OpenGL extensions along with
lot's of other info.
