The ViRGE MX is supported by the XF86_SVGA server. You'll wanna look
here:

http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/S3V3.html#7

You'll also wanna look for documentation on using Linux on your laptop.
For example, you could go here:

http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html

and find a laptop that is similar to yours (though maybe not the exact
model number) and learn a lot from that documentation.

I'm not familiar with the Triden 8400. My recommendation is to find the
chipset that it uses and look at the documentation for XFree86 3.3.6
(http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/index.html).

Once you have X fully up and running, and the software you
listed installed, you'll probably wanna download Performer :) Though,
with software-only Mesa, it is gonna be _very_ slow.

SGI 230. http://www.sgi.com/workstations/230/

Yes.

The 230 is currently shipping. The 330 and 550 will be shipping soon.
You can order these workstations with Linux pre-installed. When you
buy pre-installed, you'll get XFree86-4.0, Optimized OpenGL drivers,
and Performer 2.3.1.

If you're not comfortable messing with configuring XFree86 or working the
necessary magic to get XFree86 + one of the many hw-accelerated versions
of Mesa up, compiled, and running, then I definately recommend getting a
pre-installed solution.

I'm not aware of hw-accelerated OpenGL drivers for ViRGE MX.

hope that helps,
tom
