I use Maya to make aircraft flight paths. Clicking in path waypoints defines a spline curve. I output the path animations, which include elevation angle, azimuth, range, pitch, roll, and yaw. A program can be written in the Maya MEL scripting language to output an ASCII file in any format that you want. The animation can be previewed in a 3-D window using Maya's VCR-like control buttons and time slider. The motion of the aircraft can be fine-tuned in position, aspect, and time by dragging manipulator icons.
I have heavily modified Maya using MEL scripts (about 8k lines of code) so that digital elevation and feature data can be used to construct a scene which can be rendered for use as static background images. We replace all the Maya functions with custom functions to make the workflow easy for those people who have no idea what a polygon is. A separate Performer application loads the background images and flys aircraft models in real-time.
