wild guess, are you running twm? There's a bug in the existing version of
Performer on Linux where it will fail with the above error message if the
window manager doesn't create the atom: _MOTIF_WM_HINTS.

two quick solutions:

1) Run a window manager that creates that hint: fvwm, fvwm2,
enlightenment, kde, and probably a couple of others. I know twm and
WindowMaker do not create that atom.

2) Run perfly in a window or with a size that is not equal to your screen
width/height. i.e. perfly -W1279,1023 town_ogl.perfly

This bug will be fixed in the next release of Performer on Linux.
If this wasn't the problem, lemme know.

As far as hardware accleration is concerned, depending on how you got
XFree86-4.0, you may need to do extra stuff. If you went to
www.redhat.com and did a search for XFree86-4.0 and grabbed their rpms,
you'll probably have to do some extra things. With RedHat's rpm, you'll
have enough to run s/w-only Mesa. I had to go grab glut, libGLU.so.1,
/etc/X11/XF86Config, etc. from:

http://dri.sourceforge.net/resources/resources.html

For 3dfx, RedHat's rpms were missing the kernel module and another file
(which i'm forgetting at the moment). I had to do a cvs checkout, build,
grab and install the two files. After that, I insmod'ed the kernel
module, and had hw-accel going once again.

An alternative approach is to do a cvs checkout from cvs.sourceforge.net
and build and install from there. See http://dri.sourceforge.net for more
details.

hope that helped,
tom
