Hi Bram,
If you are willing there are lots of companies offering polygon
reduction tools. If they do not handle your particular database
format you may have to convert to a format they support first
and then back again afterwards. Here are a few:
http://www.taylortrade.com/sim/rr.htm
http://www.tgs.com/
http://www.kitware.com/vtk.html
Converters:

A plugin for Multigen creator:

There is some source code on these sites:

Subject: polygon reduction
Hello,
I require polygon reduction functionality for my performer apps.
I have a 400K-vertex model that I want to reduce by a factor 5 or so.
Currently, I am evaluating OpenInventor version 2.5
OpenInventor was acquired from sgi by tgs, and tgs is now marketing
this product.
However, the results I get with OpenInventor2.5 are not satisfactory.
E.g: OpenInventor2.5's reorganisation (with ivfix e.g.) messes up my models.
The old ivfix from sgi's 2.1 version does not have this fault.
What do other performer developers use for their polygon reduction tasks?
(and stripifying tasks?)
Thanks in advance,
Bram Stolk
