for the fastest (but not elegant) you can play sounds by using the
system() fn like so:

        system("playaiff foo.aiff&");

        where playaiff is a program and foo.aiff is the file

but you don't get much control and it can cause icky things to happen if
you call it too frequently...

even so, it's a great rapid prototype with no additional software needed.
