Well, if you only need to introduce some kind of sound without doing
complicated effects, I think there is no need to go to 3dparty products.
Just use the Digital Media Libraries from the Irix OS. With a little effort you
can get a base sound class i(and with more effort you
could get a lot of effects). You can use the sproc call in order to play sounds
asynchronously.

If you are in a hurry, you can do a system("sfplay sound_file") call.

By the way, if you are using performer with linux, you may use the
/dev/dsp device. There are audio libraries similar to the Irix libaudiofile,
and is very easy to program this kind of stuff.
