Transparent Bin Sorting for Ortho Projection

I have a channel that is setup as an ortho projection for map rendering.
I add both opaque and transparent objects into the scene for this
channel. The sorting order for the transparent bin is back to front
based upon the distance from the viewpoint to the center of the bounding
sphere of each object. My problem is the sorting is done on range not on
depth. In my application I have no way of designating a particular
projection for an object. Hence, no way to specifically zero out the x
and z values of the bounding volumes center. Anyone know how to get a
depth (Y axis) sort out of Performer? Any cheap and dirty ways to handle
this situation?
