This can be tricky, but it's the kind of thing you do once and can
forget about once you've settled on a card & drivers. The difficulty
depends on the card you choose.
Right now Linux is generally slower unless you get the right Alpha
XFree86 server with the DRI & some suitable OpenGL implementation, even
then it may take some time for things to get fully optimized.
So in the short term Linux is a bit more risky and less well supported
with less graphics performance. In the medium term that will change with
some noteable and significant introductions due from SGI really soon.
Some of these changes were evident at Linux World recently.
