Yes, it is possible to convert openflight ( all other performer loadable ) files to dted. Assuming that you can write a solid DTED file and have xyz to lat,long,alt conversion matrices ready, all you need to do is to use an isector to build a height map of your terrain. You may construct an isector pointing -z direction and scan the terrain to compute the height for each point intersecting with the isector. What you'll have is an array of hight for each point in the database then you can use this data to generate dted or image etc.
