Ah, this (in addition to NO_SORT'ing PFSORT_OPAQUE_BIN) did it.
The pfChannel man page insinuates that leaving PFCULL_SORT out of
pfChanTravMode (what I had tried) accomplishes the same thing:
When PFCULL_SORT is set, IRIS Performer sorts the database into
"bins" which are rendered in a user-specified order. ...

Advance apologies for this RTFM question, but ...
Can I use a mixture of manual bin'ing (for just part of my scene graph)
and automatic (i.e., done by Performer) sorting for the rest of the scene
graph?
