The nVidia docs list a nr of files that should
be deleted prior to installing nvidia's xserver,
being:

  /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore* 
  /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx* 
  /usr/lib/libGL* 
  /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL*

I always delete these after a XFree86 4.01 install, and before
an nvidia glx install.
It works.
