Ah. Thanks for the help. (And thanks to all the other people who
responded).

You are right; the man page for SoDB is quite explicit that
SoDB::Init() should be called before constructing any nodes.

It doesn't appear that the man pages for any of the nodes mention
their dependence on SoDB. It seems that such a critical relationship
would warrant a few words, perhaps in the "See Also" section. Is there
a place to submit bug reports for the documentation?
