So to reply to myself, it looks like it was an issue only on my host.
When I tried it on another pc, it worked ok and after some time with
changing various global environment variables, it suddenly began to work on
the first host too. I will keep an eye on it if the issue appears again, to
find what really caused it. But for now, consider the previous email as a
false alert.
