ENOTDIR in unlink means:

   A component used as a directory in pathname is not, in  fact, a directory.

The only case that I could spot is if we try to unlink a path with a trainling /.

David, do you still have the dumps causing these problems around?  And if yes
would you be willing to test some patches to debug this further?
