Change the top-level GNUmakefile to also specify the '--build' option to configure: config configure config.cache : configure.in rm -f config.cache autoconf ./configure --build=i386-unknown-linux-gnu

It looks like an old config.sub. What is its timestamp (3rd line of the script) ? If it's more than 6-10 month old, try to get new versions of config.sub and config.guess (from the automake project).

You're right Martin... SLES 9.1 come with automake 1.8.3, and it seems that this is the source of my problems, but SuSE don't provide an update for automake, so i will use the workaround of Jan-Frode
