I was reading a bit through the messages about high activity in the log file area of the disk. Seems like ...well...that's likely going to up the #seeks needed for writes, right? So lets say you had

Yes, external logs are available for this reason. Your cross-log scenario would probably only help if you were really only writing to 1 fs at a time. You can look at the stats with the xfs_stats.pl s
