You probably didn't need to do that. from the man page: By default, xfs_metadump obfuscates most file (regular file, directory and symbolic link) names and extended attribute names to allow the dumps

2.6.24 is pretty old. Did you try with a recent kernel? We had some fixes for in-core memory corruption although I don't remember one in this area.
