faster?), and much slower in the actual data (maybe because there isn't much
actual data written): 500Kb/s.

sdg is the drive holding the log.
This disk can do 80Mb/s sustained write speed (by using dd):

I would have expected log I/O to be about 40-60Mb/s, but its 8Mb/s.
