That could also be the problem.  Why would corruption of the file system then 
occur?

Just a little more information.  The array had ~600gb of data.  Now there is
400gb, with a large portion (~150gb) in lost+found.  Of the remaining data (not
in lost+found), files are missing in pretty much every directory.  

Any options for repairing this file system?
