Can you trace the partitioning command to see where it's writing?

I'm having trouble creating a sun label w/ fdisk, but when it seemed to work:

   Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdc1             0       554     56508   83  Linux native
/dev/sdc2  u        554       832     28356   82  Linux swap
/dev/sdc3             0       832     84864    5  Whole disk

so sdc1 starts at block 0; mkfs.xfs will write block 0.  Where is the
sun disklabel stored on disk?
