mkfs.xfs uses the BLKGETSIZE64 ioctl to get the device size; can you 
instrument the platform_findsizes() function to see what value mkfs is getting
from the ioctl (or write your own ioctl test)?

        error = ioctl(fd, BLKGETSIZE64, &size);

returns "size" in bytes.
