Is this in anyway related to problem i observed a little while back where a 
full FS would generate a LOT of debug output ? 

What's dmesg show ?

Doesn't sound like a feature - do you have a reproducible test case?
(the QA tests routinely fill up file systems every night, no hangs
there atm).  A kdb dump from the hung machine would be useful too.
