I'd consider it a bit risky to use an unstable kernel for a production
system that holds that much data.

I've set up a 1,1 TB filesystem (3ware 7850 RIAD5 with 8x 160 GByte
IDE) with a simple mkfs.xfs as a multi purpose file server running
kernel 2.4.18 (2.2.17 does not support over 1 TB) and the system's been
running fine for at least over one year now (I don't remember
precisely). Samba is some 2.2.x,
