Hi there!
I'll try to break that up for you in (small) steps:
>From Windows (English version but you'll get it):
Start-Run:
ftp oss.sgi.com
You will be prompted for username and password
User: ftp
Password: me@xxxxxxxx (or your real e-mail address)
Then issue these commands (step by step cd's to enable easily detectable
spelling mistakes) - make sure each one receives a correct acknowledgement:
bin
hash
quote pasv (knew that for how to make a windows ftp passive? :)
cd projects
cd xfs
cd download
cd Release-1.0.2
cd installer
cd i386
get RH7.2-SGI-XFS-1.0.2a.iso
(at this point you'll start seeing some hash marks (#) as download progress
indicator)
When the transfer is done you'll end up with the file on your desktop or on
your \windows, whatever, directory depending on the windows version you have
(it's the desktop for recent ones, anyway).
It's the same for any other file you may want to download. Just break the path
component into each directory and "get" the file in at the end of the chain. It
should work for every "ftp://" URL you've got, except if you're behind a
restrictive firewall with only proxying enabled - still I've made the transfer
"passive" for greater chances of success.
There, I should call it the "how to download big files without a browser for
win32 users".
As always, hope to have helped,
Daniel Fonseca
PS: BTW, since I'm getting (yeah, right :-) your attention, I got some notices
of people experimenting random "hangs" of RH7.2+XFS users (they say the system
just "pauses" literaly for a while (from 1 to 5 seconds) and then resumes
normal operation - sometimes it just hangs and has to be reset. Is this a known
issue? (not a regular leecher, myself) - I plan to put 2.4.16-XFS on those
machines, anyway, and see how it goes from there.
Other than that, XFS has been working the way it's supposed to (which is in
itself a great thing) for a lot of servers deployed. Great job you guys and
greetings from sunny (yet cold) Portugal.
