I'm neither kernel nor XFS guru, but I'm just wondering: is this the first
time you're using this compiler with an XFS-enabled kernel? Because if it
is (meaning you have zero experience that gcc-2.96 and your XFS-enabled
kernel work fine together) then I recommend you use some other gcc.
