Just sort of a me too kind of thing. With my most recent installation of
this thing, the kernel source that was installed from rpm also wouldn't
compile and it wasn't because it was trying to use gcc instead of kgcc.
When I tried it the /usr/src/linux/kdb directory was missing. I don't
know if that was just a fluke in the way the rpm installed on my system or
if it is just plain missing in the rpm. Juan is experiencing a problem
compiling the vanilla 2.4.0 kernels as well so I suspect you are right
about his problem being the compiler confusion, but if anyone else has the
same compile problem I had, I just ended up blowing away the source
directory and grabbing the beta kernel tree from cvs.
