I am seeing a similar problem: when I insert and remove pcmcia cards on my
dell laptop, the machine locks up hard (can't even get into kdb). I just
tried rebooting the kernel with devfs=nomount option to disable devfs on
bootup and I am *still* having the problem with pcmcia. (i am using
2.4.0+xfs -- would love to upgrade to 2.4.1 but can't access network
becasue of lack of pcmcia support :( ).

so unless having devfs compiled into the kernel (but no used) kills pcmcia
(doubtful), it should not be devfs.
