DMAPI and CVS

I have been unable to build the CVS kernel with DMAPI support - using 
menuconfig, I can only select DMAPI as module, however it is saved as yes. With 
xconfig I can only click on yes, even though module is an option. No matter 
what I do , DMAPI does not work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
