Yes, From a fresh mkfs. 

It works for me on x86 platforms.

I tried it on two Xscale board, each with 
IDE and SCSI disks, and it is the same problem.
In the same setup, I used ext3, it works fine.
This eliminates the hardware issues.

this is from a fresh mkfs too?

First thing i'd try is another device, I think, to start
ruling out hardware.  rm -rf has always worked for me... :)
