I have finally discovered the cause of the problem outlined below. The
default umask on the ftp server meant that the new rpms copied from the SGI
CD were readable via ftp. For some reason, the failure to copy these files
via ftp didn't show up anywhere on the machine being built. However,
changing the perms to 444 on all files in the RPMS directory has fixed the
problem.

Subject: Problems with network kickstart install

Hello,

I am trying to get an XFS system installed by using a kickstart file on a
floppy and an install location on an FTP server. This works fine with a
vanilla RH7.1 distribution but fails when using the SGI provided ISO image.
The install seems to proceed normally until it gets to the post-install
phase at which point it prints the error message

install exited abnormally - received signal 11

If I use essentially the same kickstart file but specify the installation
mechanism as cdrom then everything is fine (bar having to swap CDs and watch
the progress). If I boot into rescue mode from the XFS cd then no
installation is found. However, mounting the partitions by hand from
terminal 2 does work and curiously, the /boot partition doesn't have a
kernel or other crucial files (although the other partitions are fine), so I
am guessing that it is something here that is failing. Has anyone else come
across this problem and solved it.

Further details.

In both cases, booting from CD using

linux ks=floppy

Kickstart file contains an FTP URL as the installation method. It also
specifies the machines network settings. The stage1 and stage2 images are
successfully loaded off the network and my custom 168 packages as specified
in the kickstart file do get transferred.

I built the FTP archive by

a) taking a copy of my working 'standard' RH7.1 area (includes disk1 and
disk2 RPMs).
b) copied contents of XFS cd over the top of this area thus over-writing
things like the .img files and the comps and hdlist files.

Regards,

Bret
