It looks like the built firmware was added back to the tree about a year ago - on purpose, even. Not sure what the circumstances surrounding that change were, but it's in the tree at this point. So there should be no need to rebuild. Unless you have problems ofcourse. That is what the FAQ entry refers to. I still build my kernel with this option enabled.
