I downloaded the ISO image, and did a clean install. The 3com (3C985) Gig E

the card works fine. The System is an Intel SBT2 Motherboard, with 2 PCI
cards 3C905 and an Adaptec 39160. Any thoughts?

Hmm, would that be the Copper Gigabit Ethernet card? modprobe bc5200 It should be autodetected. The card has been around for a while now.

If you know what module it uses you could switch to the second console ctrl-alt-F2 and do a modprobe.
