partimage makes a physical copy of the partition. It's not a simple "tar.gz"
of files. In other words, it does the same work than dd does, but it forget
to copy all free blocks in order to save space and time. Then everything is
kept (bootsector informations, all attributes that can exist, ...) It even
keeps location of files on the disk, then the vmlinuz file won't be moved,
and LILO will continue to work.
Cool!
I will add it to the FAQ after helping out my sister who is moving.

Every program has two purposes one for which
it was written and another for which it wasn't
I use the last kind.
