Can somebody of SGI confirm ? That I do not use any more gcc-2.96RH to
compile kernel-2.4-xfs.

The updated 2.96 RH compiler available does compile but is not supported. If you want a kernel that has been tested a lot compile it with 2.91.66. This is known to work.
