Thanks to everyone for the help.  I have downloaded the SRPM files and 
have useable RPMs for all of the command files.
But...

Simon is correct, the kernel source from SGI for RedHat 2.4.18-17.7 will 
fail for i686.
I can build using the SRPM from Redhat for the same kernel build (with 
out the SGI XFS bits).
Am I correct in thinking that something is changed in the SGI-XFS source 
that is causing this problem?

The files effected seem to be kernel-doc-2.4.18-17SGI_XFS_1.2pre2.i386.rpm
and  kernel-source-2.4.18-17SGI_XFS_1.2pre2.i386.rpm

When I attemp to build from the SGI source it tells me I need "gcc >= 
2.96-98".
I currently have 2.96-85.  This system is RedHat 7.1 with all updates 
except for 2.4.9-31SGI_XFS_1.1 kernel.
RedHat network has a GCC 3.1 compiler suite for RedHat 7.3.   Also the 
gcc levels exceed the needed one for
both RedHat 7.2 and 7.3.  Does anyone know if I can just do a upgrade to 
3.1?
