Are these files full of null characters? And did this happen after a system crash, or otherwise non-clean shutdown?

Ah, so I wasn't the only one! My .ICEauthority file was 0 length, and the .gnome dir had many files that was messed up. It MIGHT have been null chars, I don't quite remember. But this would happen after a CLEAN shutdown. I even tried a few syncs then shutdown, still had the same problem.

But as Knut Bjuland said, the problem goes away using the CVS kernel. (2.4.17 about 2 weeks ago)
