On mainstream hardware, I've had no real problems with Mandrake. 
Start adding SCSI, multiple NICs and other things to the equation
and things changes.

One thing I couldn't stand about 6.x and 7.x is booting the
installer off of a SCSI CD-ROM.  It would get into a chicken/egg
thing where it would load the SCSI module twice, and not let you
choose the correct CD-ROM.
