[ Appologize for the YAMTR, "yet another me too reply") ]
I have a 3Ware 6200 (dual-80GB, 160GB usable RAID-0) in a single CPU
Athlon system using the updated firmware and the driver in RedHat
7.1 release (updated 2.4.3 kernel in 7.1 update / also used by SGI
XFS 1.0.1). 0 issues, and have used 3Ware 6200s in other systems
(both RAID-0 and RAID-1).
I was considering putting a 3Ware 6410 (quad-40GB) in a dual-CPU
Celeron system using the updated firmware and the same
driver/kernel.
Should I be concerned (the BP6/dual-Cel466 w/768MB PC100 ECC memory
has been rock solid with RedHat 6.2, kernel 2.2.18 w/Ext3) with this
configuration -- RedHat 7.1 / SGI XFS 1.0.1?
Is the 3Ware not recommended in dual-CPU systems at this time?
And/Or is the XFS filesystem not?
I'm still debating whether or not to use RAID-5 (for 120GB usable)
or RAID-0+1 (for 80GB usable). Given the fact that (A) the RAID-5
write performance is lackluster (due to the lack of the memory
requirements usually needed for RAID-5), (B) there has been
questions on the 3Ware cards with RAID-5 (which was added in the
6000-series via firmware update, recently updated again), and (C)
it's only giving me 40GB more in the end, I think I'm going to "play
it safe" RAID-0+1 (aka RAID-10) instead of RAID-5 (which the 3Ware
cards excel at in StorageReview.COM comparisons).
As such, do you think 3Ware+XFS is safe as long as I stick with just
RAID-10 on my dual-CPU? All the problems I've seen with 3Ware have
been at the hands of RAID-5 -- although I haven't tried it with a
dual-CPU system yet, let alone XFS on a dual-CPU.
Comments, discussion (on or off-list), flames welcome.
