Very odd...
Since this is the Red Hat kernel, and it's not a rare scsi chipset, I'm
surprised that there's a problem with it... Hrm. If you feel like
experimenting, you might get the original 2.4.3-12 BOOT kernel from Red
Hat, and see if it exhibits the same problem?
