Try installing the kgcc package, which is an alias for an older, but
more kernel-compatible gcc. Then edit the Makefile to use kgcc
(comments in the Makefile explain how to do this).
"2.96" has some issues with our kernel - or maybe it's the other way
around...
We're moving towards better compiler-independence, but for now, use
kgcc.
