It's hard to understand why you are having this problem.  I have not seen 
anything
like it
although I will say that there were a couple of occassions a few days ago when a
compile
of the previous kernel source from the SGI CVS server did fail on my box.  I 
don't
recall
if the error was like yours though.  On a much happier note I will say that I 
was
able to
compile the code for the 2.4.2 kernel source that I downloaded from their CVS
server.
One thing you might be failing to do is update your cvs tree.  Make sure you 
issue
the following
commands to get the source tree

$ cvs -z3 checkout linux-2.4-xfs
$ cvs -z3 update -d

It is important that you not forget the second of the two commands above.  I 
myself
am
relatively new to using CVS so I can't explain why but I am almost certain that 
the
update
is absolutely important for getting the latest source code.
