There are Makefile issues with changes that went into test12,
which has problems with defining EXTRAVERSION (xfs adds -XFS to
EXTRAVERSION in the top level Makefile). Here's a comment from
Keith Owens, a build maintainer:

More practically, I found that after a make mrproper, etc. if you
"touch Makefile" before proceeding with the compilation, the versioning
comes out right. If you continue to see problems, please let us know.
