To the XFS team:
Thanks for a great software product!
Due to your efforts I can now go home and spend time with my new baby rather
then fixing a server.
Over a year ago I won a contract to build a large database server. My system
had to handle very large files passed from an IBM AS/400 and I needed XFS
for its ability to handle 10+ gig files. Currently the system runs
postgresql with about 120 million records on a 100 Gig XFS partition.
Recently the Dell server started having issues with its RAID controller and
the fix was to install a newer kernel. Also recently my wife gave birth to a
baby girl and I did not look forward to spending the day recompiling
software and testing my apps.
I came across the update RPM for the 1.1 system and installed them. Other
then a typo (on my part) the installation directions were perfect. I did
not expect such a complex upgrade to go so well. The first time I installed
XFS is was a mess of patching and compiling (partly due to other dell
drivers that I needed - Now thoes drivers are in the stock RH kernel)
Thanks again,
Once I go back to work I will write a letter to RedHat telling them about my
experience (and how I sold RedHat linux into a primarily Windows shop on the
merits of the XFS filesystem.) This app is in use for a large financial
company and and I am now working with my client to develop a larger app that
will require a 300Gig database to be used by other fortune 500 firms. (Along
with another few costly RedHat support contracts)
A year ago XFS helped me make money, today the completeness of the project
is saving me time.
Thanks again,
-Aaron Held
