Whats your shell? Does /bin/bash point at something other than
bash? (looks like scripts/Configure requires bash).
The error above is _really_ odd - I'd have expected something
more like "scripts/Configure:" for starters, not with the "s"
replaced like that... and the shell code around those lines
looks valid to me, so shouldn't be bailing out like that.
Can you compile 2.4 kernels downloaded from kernel.org?
