Try installing an XFS capable kernel.

If the system boots fine into it, try upgrading glibc.

If your system still boots, upgrade rpm itself.

If despite all odd even that succeeds, drop in non-X mode and update
X.

After that try apt-get dist-upgrade. Have a very long walk and come
back to check which packages did not upgrade properly (you did add >
/tmp/apt-get-dist-upgrade.log 2>&1 to the apt-get dist-upgrade, didn't
you?;). Fix the 20-30 packages by manually uninstalling and
reinstalling them again.

If you have been reading thus far you are a lucky bastard ;)

(more seriously: the above could work, but you should backup)
