I can confirm similar problems which (if my memory holds) started up after 1.2
XFS release (I didnt followed CVS XFS at that time so they possibly started
between 1.1 and 1.2 release). I have reported this too as see here
http://oss.sgi.com/archives/linux-xfs/2003-01/msg00059.html
To me it looks like either XFS or some other common linux code (VM? VFS?) is
having a big memory pressure and doesnt want to give up cached memory which
triggers the OOM killer. Im not a kernel dev so this explanation may be stupid
:)
It would be interesting for Chris to try out 2.4.23 or later based xfs kernel.
They changed the VM code and disabled(?) the OOM killer. I must say that my
systems after upgrading to 2.4.23 based kernel dont have that problem (the
memory "leak") anymore and seem to work pretty nice (almost like the 2.4.9-31
XFS 1.1 release which worked best of all XFS releases for me until now).
