Tom, you're creating 800,000 files and directories -and-
constantly running something over them to keep all the inodes in
memory?  on a machine with 512M?  This might well fall into 
the category of fork-bombs and such.  :)

Perhaps xfs isn't letting go of inodes as it should, but you are really
beating the heck out of the box here, I think.

When you said xfs_check failed, how did it fail.

Also for completeness, what is this 'tree' application you're running
over the dirs, is it the tree command itself?

please also try more recent code, xfs's inode size shrank at one point,
after 2.4.20 I think.
