Ah, OK, this is then not really related to SGI or atrpms kernel, they
just happen to have too long of a kernel name.

The entries are created by /sbin/new-kernel-pkg part of the mkinitrd
rpm, which uses grubby. Looking at its man page it should have been
dealing fine with the issue:

But apparently it does not. Maybe the RH8.0 version didn't have that
check. Read grubby's man page to find out.
