Do you use a Broadcom Gigabit NIC with the tg3 driver ?
(3Com Gigabit NICs use Broadcom chips for instance)

The tg3 driver was broken (redhat bugid 69920 and 78059) in
almost all the 2.4.18 Redhat kernels. I have seen exactly the
same problem as you described on a dual athlon with Broadcom
Gigabit NIC, NFS transfers would crash the machine w/o leaving
any error message in the logs. The 2.4.18-27 kernel fixed the
issue. 2.4.20 kernels will work too.
